What It Is:
Spotify is the most mainstream app available to stream a giant catalog of new and classic music.
Who is on it?:
Tens of millions of people use Spotify to listen to music.
Would My Child Want It?:
It’s pretty popular amongst teens, and pretty safe as well, as long as you know what music your kids are listening to.
Where Can It Be Used?:
Any mobile device with app store access; there’s also a desktop version for computers.
What Should I Watch Out For?:
- Obviously just the genres of music. Free music is great, but if your kids listen to songs your haven’t heard yet or have language that’s inappropriate then you will have to step in and have a conversation.
- Also the free version of Spotify has ads, so just be aware that some ads could be more focused on selling products or on encouraging your kids to listen to music you may not approve of.
What Are The Positives?:
Free music is free music. It’s nice having a place where you don’t have to pay to listen. There is a paid subscription version that gets rid of ads, but at the end of the day if your kids just need it for car rides or while traveling, the free version if probably just fine.
What Are The Negatives?:
The only negatives we see are adult-themed lyrics and maybe some ads that could get your kids to click on an external site.
What We Think:
Spotify is very useful to have; just be involved in the type of music your kids listen to so you won’t be surprised or shocked.
