What It Is:
Pinterest is one of the largest social hangouts on the web: think of it as a giant bulletin board with different things to post, like images, craft, clothing and anything else you can think of. It is primarily used by women.
Who is on it?:
Pinterest says 80% of its users are women ages 18-40.
Would My Child Want It?:
Your young child would probably not be interested, but if your older child(ren) enjoys seeing whats popular on the internet on any given topic, then this will be a place that they will want to go.
Where Can It Be Used?:
It’s essentially an app and a website in one. You can follow your friends and see what they put pin on their boards. (pinning means posting – boards are the different categories they make to sort their pins)
What Should I Watch Out For?:
We would say that 90% of the the “pins” on Pinterest are okay, however there are some things that get pinned that are not for immature kids or those who struggle with sexual temptation. Things like women models, the latest in swimwear, to possibly sexy photos of the newest fashion trends.
What Are The Positives?:
Pinterest is an extremely convenient, very searchable, easily categorizable, and intuitively useful way to access the creative resources of the web.
What Are The Negatives?:
There are few negatives with Pinterest, as those who use it tend to steer clear of explicit and/or pornographic material.
What We Think:
If you do let your kids have an account, you as a parent should have one too and follow your child to see what they post and like. Also always have an open and clear dialogue about what’s okay and not okay to pin.
