What It Is:
iTunes (or the App Store) is just the name of the place where you can find, purchase, and download apps, music, or videos for your Apple devices.
Who is on it?:
Anyone with an Apple device running iOS will be using this. This includes iPhones, iPads, and the iPod Touch. Apple computers also come equipped with iTunes and the App Store.
Would My Child Want It?:
Your child would need to go there to download an app, video, or piece of music to their Apple device.
Where Can It Be Used?:
On any Apple-based device.
What Should I Watch Out For?:
This is the marketplace for all the apps, age-appropriate or not. There are some adult-themed apps, movies, or music that you probably don’t want your kids seeing or even worse downloading, so make sure if you allow your child to surf the iTunes store that you check in with them often about what they are seeing or wanting to download.
What Are The Positives?:
It’s not really a positive or negative thing, iTunes is more a tool that can be used to download good or bad apps; like any tool it’s all in how you use it.
What Are The Negatives?:
We would say as a parent make sure you have your child’s password to their account so you can see what apps they have downloaded. There are a lot of apps that are NOT safe for kids.
What We Think:
Overall it’s not too dangerous as long you check in with your kids on what they want and why they are surfing the marketplace. Just make sure you don’t just give them unchecked freedom and then find all sorts of bad apps, music, or movies they’ve downloaded; instead, be a proactive and wise parent, setting expectations before you let them have the phone or device.
